Our Legacy:

According to Greek mythology, Pegasus, the immortal winged horse, was born from Medusa’s neck upon Perseus beheading her. Inheriting Poseidon’s gift, Pegasus first created a spring on Mount Helicon, home to the muses, with the striking of his hoof at the ground.

Pegasus was subsequently tamed by Greek hero Bellerophon, with Athena’s assistance, and went on to help Bellerophon slay the Chimera, amongst other heroic feats. This partnership ended on Bellerophon attempting to reach Mount Olympus, with the belief mortals on earth weren’t worthy of him and his position was among the gods - Zeus punished Bellerophon’s hubris. Pegasus did, however, reach the heavens and was stabled by Zeus, eventually rewarded for his service with a constellation.

Pegasus has since become symbolic in a number of ways:

• Pegasus’s ability to transcend earthly bounds, flying to Olympus, represents a freedom without limitation.
• With links to Bellerophon, the monster-slayer, Pegasus represents bravery, but also caution against hubristic traits, following Bellerophon’s fate.
• With Pegasus’ connection to Helicon, the winged horse also became symbolic of virtue, creativity and inspiration.
