According to Greek mythology, Pegasus, the immortal winged horse, was born from Medusa’s neck upon Perseus beheading her. Inheriting Poseidon’s gift, Pegasus first created a spring on Mount Helicon, home to the muses, with the striking of his hoof at the ground.
Pegasus was subsequently tamed by Greek hero Bellerophon, with Athena’s assistance, and went on to help Bellerophon slay the Chimera, amongst other heroic feats. This partnership ended on Bellerophon attempting to reach Mount Olympus, with the belief mortals on earth weren’t worthy of him and his position was among the gods - Zeus punished Bellerophon’s hubris. Pegasus did, however, reach the heavens and was stabled by Zeus, eventually rewarded for his service with a constellation.
